汤南南 Tang Nannan

1969年生于福建云霄,艺术家、教师。厦门大学艺术学院硕士,中国美术学院跨媒体艺术学院博士。中国美术学院跨媒体艺术学院教师,工作生活于杭州。

作品以大海和水为核心意象,讨论时间与记忆、乡愁和生死、神话与诗歌等多个命题。试图以社会学文化研究为基础,尝试绘画、装置、摄影、多屏幕录像剧场等多种艺术方式的融通互鉴,努力探索基于自身生活经验,关切当代生活情境的跨媒体艺术。

2017年第57届威尼斯双年展中国馆艺术家,曾于北京民生现代美术馆、中国美院美术馆、纽约Michele Mariaud Gallery举办个展。作品先后于第三届乌拉尔工业双年展、第九届上海双年展、第一届南京三年展、法国ALTKIRCH现代美术馆、澳大利亚白兔美术馆、广东美术馆、上海民生现代美术馆、中央美院美术馆展出。

Born in Yunxiao, Fujian Province 1969, Tang Nannan is both an artist and a teacher of art. Nannan received his education from the Department of Fine arts in Xiamen University and then graduated from School of Intermedia Art in China Academy of Art as a member among the first Ph.Ds of practice of modern art. Being a Hangzhou-based artist, Tang Nannan is also a teacher in School of Intermedia Art, China Academy of Art.


Nannan’s work takes the sea and water as the core image, and questions of time and memory, nostalgia and life and death,myths and poetry are discussed. With his cultural sociology research, the artist tries to integrate multiple forms of art like painting, video installation, photograph, multiscreen video theatre and makes effort to exploring Intermedia Art based on his own life experience and concerning modern living circumstances.

He is an artist of The 57th International Art Exhibition-La Biennale Di Venezia Pavilion of China. Nannan has held solo exhibitions in Minsheng Art Museum in Beijing, Michele Mariaud Gallery in New York, and CAA Art Museum in Hangzhou.


Besides, he participated in exhibitions such as the 3th Ural Industrial Biennale, the 9th Shanghai Biennale, the first Triennial of Chinese Contemporary Art, and Chinese Contemporary Video Exhibition at CRAC Alsace, Altkirch in France. The work has been exhibited at White Rabbit Gallery of Ausralia, Guangdong Museum of Art, Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum, CAFA Art Museum.

铸浪为山 Billennium Waves


航行在太平洋上,此起彼伏的波涛,此起彼伏的念想。

一朵浪花从涌起到消散,两秒钟;喜马拉雅山脉从隆起到陷落,30亿年——山脉是大地的浪花,浪花是大海的山脉……

原始生命从海洋迈向陆地,原始人类从陆地探至海洋;第一双面对海洋的眼,第一丝照应浪花的念想,海天相接处一道闪电掠过,大地沉重地颤抖起来。存在与变化角力随即在他面前展开。

When I saw the waves while sailing in the Pacific Ocean,

It came to my mind that it took only 2 seconds for wave to rise and vanish. However it would take 3 billion years for Himalaya Mountain to form and collapse——transcending the time, the mountain would be wave of the earth and wave would be the water mountain of the sea.

The primitive lives left ocean for land, and the primitive people who were from the land set off for the ocean; a bolt of lightning flashed at the horizon, and the earth quaked heavily, when the first time that the eyes saw the sea, which the mind thought about the waves.

遗忘之海 OBLIVIOUS OCEAN


 与此刻平静分明的海面相比,记忆中的洋面是神秘黑暗的,汹涌的海水中潜藏着无数的怪兽。那是一片无主的混沌,没有陆地和海洋的分界,海水想去哪里就去哪里……

 我寻着这些景象而涂画:少年时心中的怪兽、祖母和村里的老海人讲述的传奇又伴着成年后对大海的经验从画面中渗出,文学中的幻觉、电影中的蜃景再现而再生。对前辈创造的山水画精华逐渐领会,浪花和云朵交织在一起,情绪和海雾一同弥漫。大海看上去也不那么像海了,海浪和山峰在此重叠。

然而,我依然没有找到“记忆”中的那片汪洋,那是人类出现之前的海洋。从绝对奇异的海面上却有似曾相似的人朝你走来,面目模糊。这时你也许会问自己,该不该回头,遗忘之海的深沉壮阔让你不想靠岸。

Compared with its calmness and clearness today, the surface of the ocean is dark and mysterious in memory, numerous monsters lurking beneath its surging tides. It was chaos without the existence of man, without any border between land and sea, even without land, allowing the water to travel to anywhere it pleased…

Recalling those scenes, I drew them down: the beast in the teenager’s mind of me, and the legends told by the old fishermen were all shining through in the paper, replaying the illusion in literation, and the castles in the air. I gradually grasped the essence of the Chinese landscape painting created by ancestors, with the waves and clouds interweaving, the emotion and mist permeating. The sea didn’t look like sea anymore, only to see the waves and mountain overlapping.

However, I still haven’t found the boundless ocean of my memory, which is the ocean before the appearance of man. Imagine the first human to see the ocean, where you may glimpse someone familiar walking towards you, but you are not able to distinguish his contour clearly-exactly like the fact that you are from the ocean but you know so little about it. You would ask yourself whether to return or not, for the surging waves of the forgetting sea didn’t make you want to pull into the shore.
